Taming Dragons

Depression
is a sleeping dragon
curled within
the cave of my brain.
When she sleeps,
she sleeps deeply.
When she wakes,
she wakes hungry.

Life’s treasures
glitter and shine
as I turn them
in my hands –
each small victory,
each memory,
each moment of
peace and joy.

Sometimes,
walking through
my overflowing vault,
distracted by
all I have been gifted,
I forget
to properly
honor the dragon.

That is when
a weight drops over me,
an unnamed dread,
anxiety with
no target,
and I look up
to find the dragon
staring back.

Those are the days
I am most grateful
for the band
of merry adventurers
who travel by my side,
for they are clever
and know how to
tame dragons.
