Long and Narrow

https://www.fws.gov/refuge/julia_butler_hansen/about_the_refuge.html
Long, narrow limbs
carry young deer
through dry grasses
past my window.

Long, narrow ears
turn to listen;
my father’s car
returns from town.

Long, narrow bodies
leap into motion
seeking the protection
of old growth.

Long, narrow life
stretched out ahead–
my heart aches
to join them.
